How to install fonts as shortcuts

Normally, when you install new fonts in Windows opted in two ways: do it from the right click or preview, or copy the file to the Windows Fonts folder.

Both methods are good, but we make it impossible to access a Windows feature little known: the installation of power as a shortcut.

Why install fonts as shortcuts?

Suppose you have located a few fonts that you use frequently, and install it on Windows. Months later, located between the hodgepodge of fonts installed will be an ordeal.

Installing Fonts and allows direct access, but the sources are installed and ready to be used in Windows, the physical files in the folder you want. Thus, you can keep your favorite sources apart, or even share that folder with other computers, etc.

How to install shortcuts sources?

First of all, you need Windows 7. If that’s the case, then go to Control Panel> Appearance and Personalization> Fonts.

Configuracion de fuentes

Click Font Settings and then check the option Allow installation of fonts with a shortcut .

Permitir la instalacion

After pressing OK , you will have a new option whenever you want to install a font. On the one hand, the file context menu, the menu as a shortcut Install .

Acceso Directo

In addition, the preview will get a new box called Use shortcut . Mark it to use this option.

Listen Spotify on Linux

Today almost everyone knows Spotify , the music service streaming that has revolutionized how we listen to music.

No need to have songs on your computer : just an Internet connection. Type in the name of your favorite song or group and enjoy.

But Spotify need to use the official client , available for Windows and Mac And what do people use Linux?

Here’s how to listen to your favorite music on Spotify from Linux.

The first solution that comes to mind you will create a virtual machine with Windows. To do this you can use programs like Virtualbox or VMware .

But the question arises: is it really necessary to take so many system resources and much hard disk space for only one program? There is another alternative.

Instalar Spotify en Linux con Wine

Paso 1 – Instalar Wine

There are several methods:

* From source code and following these simple instructions .
* Modem using the instructions and official packages of Wine for your Linux.
* In Debian, Ubuntu or similar, open the terminal and type sudo aptitude install wine .
* In Fedora, or similar, open the terminal and type sudo yum install wine .

Step 2 – Configure wine

From the terminal type winecfg and see the Wine configuration. In the Audio tab, make sure the sound works. You should also check the following parameters:

* Hardware acceleration: set this option to Emulation
* Sampling Frequency: 44100
* Bits per sample: 16
* Emulation handler: Unmarked

Step 3 – Install Spotify

Once you have the Windows Installer Spotify , you can open it by double clicking. If this option does not work, try running the command wine "Spotify Installer.exe" from the terminal and into the path where the file is.

Step 4 – Getting a user account

Unfortunately, for some days only you can create a new account for free via Spotify invitation. You have more information here .

Unofficial clients

Although Spotify has developed a client for Linux, makes available to developers the API . As a result officers have not sprung for Linux customers but that, today, are not a real alternative. These are the most relevant:

* despotify : although it works from the terminal, was promising because Spotify avoided publicity. But SVN is installed and must be updated often because it stops working (due to updates of the official client for Spotify). A hassle, go.
* jotify : Based on Java, the client should be a good alternative, with its own interface. But only works with Premium accounts (payment) and the installation is complicated.

Do you know other ways to use Spotify in Linux? What problems have you had with these methods?

Record the songs you hear on Spotify

Without doubt, Spotify and radio service to the letter had been much talk in recent months. A service that stands out for its stability, the relationship of quality and speed it offers and, above all, being a serious and well-implemented solution to piracy.

The only problem that may involve using a service like Spotify is that you can not download songs to copy to a CD or transfer them to your iPod. But little by little, they appear on the network programs that offer interesting functionality record the songs you play in Spotify.

Here are two programs let you track all your Spotify playlist and expand, so, your music collection.

Programs to record songs from Spotify

Two of the programs you can find on the net with specific functions to record everything you hear on Spotify are: Replay Music and Spotify Ripper. The first is a payment option very complete and easy to install. The second is a free alternative, somewhat more complex to use. Both programs are responsible for detecting an emission of Spotify, creating an MP3 file for each song and fill in all the ID3 tags correctly.

Option 1 – Replay Music

Download and install Replay Music on your PC. Once launched, go to "Settings." From this window, you can change where to save the songs and make sure the input source (Input Source) is "Audio Driver".

Click the tab "Output" to change the recording quality. Spotify issued to 168 Kbps on average so I recorded the songs at 192 Kbps maintain the quality of the broadcast. Choose this quality and click "OK."

Once ready, just click "Start Recording" in Replay Music and start playing Spotify. As they’re playing, Replay Music will create a new MP3 file in the folder, try to identify every song and labels.

Option 2 – Spotify Ripper

Download Spotify Ripper, Uncompress the package and copy the files into the same folder where you installed Spotify (by default C: \ Program Files \ Spotify).

Spotify running and make sure you’re not playing any songs. Then run "Spotify ripper.exe" check "Logg" button first and click "Spotify Hitta" and then "Rippa.

Spotify Ripper is now ready to record the songs played on Spotify. Start playback window and watch the Ripper.

If you can see the same messages, the operation is working properly. Each time a song ends, create a file Spotify MP3 Ripper in Spotify installation folder (default C: \ Program Files \ Spotify).

But if when you start playback window Ripper Spotify is not updated, something is wrong. Try restarting the system and repeat the process. If still equal, it is likely that the sound card in your PC is not compatible with Spotify Ripper.

Office-format a USB memory to NTFS in Windows XP

Javier send us a question about a very frequent operation, the disk formatting. In his case, was unable to format a large USB drive as NTFS, which Windows does not let it do by default.

There are two possible solutions to this problem. One is to use a special tool, while the other requires changing a setting in the USB memory. Look at them one by one.

Hi friends good morning.

My query is this. I have the Windows XP Home operating system installed. I need to format a drive of 32 GB Pen but with NTFS format type

When I look into the option types appear only format FAT, FAT32 . I can tell how I can do to format in NTFS type.

Thank you for your attention.

Sincerely Javier

Unlike Vista, Windows XP can not format a USB stick with NTFS file system. The advantages of using NTFS on a flash drive are evident: in addition to better performance, lets you use the Windows folder encryption and set access permissions for each file.

Solution 1: Optimizing for

By default, XP does not use the write cache on USB sticks: this enables quick removal without using the icon "Safely Remove Hardware." When not using caching, however, disable the option in the wizard NTFS formatting the drive. To enable it, go to the properties of your pen, look for the Hardware tab and click Properties:

Optimizar para rendimiento

In the Policies tab of the Properties box, select the option Optimize for performance and click OK twice. The memory will remount. When trying to format it, you’ll notice that now you have NTFS in the drop-down menu of file systems. Do not forget that quick removal is no longer reliable.

Solution 2: HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool

If you prefer to have an alternative formatting tool that forces you to change the settings for each separate USB, HP USB Disk Storage Tool can be ideal. Once installed and run, you’ll notice it looks very similar to the XP wizard:

HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool

Once you’ve selected the drive, select NTFS from the dropdown menu. You can perform a quick format and enable the compression of space if needed. If you prefer to stick with FAT32, HP USB Disk Storage Tool can add a DOS boot sector, allowing it to boot from your USB memory like a floppy disk.

Do you know another solution to this problem? Take the comments so that together we can share links, programs, and explanations. Your knowledge is welcome.

How to submit questions

We encourage you to continue sending questions so that each month we can answer the most interesting and thus provide useful solutions. Email is the following:

Just try to be concise and express as clearly as possible the problem. If a question is not answered yet, do not worry, you may have it in queue ;-)

Utilities for devices with two or more screens

The use of two or more screens are becoming increasingly widespread. According to some studies, using multiple monitors can increase productivity by over 40%, A fact not surprising when you consider that the multitasking operating systems at once fills Desktop icons and windows.

Windows native support for multiple monitors, however, leaves much to be desired, being limited to providing an extra area to put windows and icons. The rest of the interface not seem to take into account the needs of those who use two or more monitors. The main manufacturers of graphics cards and some developers have tried to fix this shortcoming.

ATI and nVidia, for example, offer their own solutions for managing multi-display environments. Hydravision, ATI, you can save up to nine Desktop profiles, add a button to maximize the windows between the screens and keyboard shortcuts that can be associated to 17 different functions. nViewOn the other hand, is included in all NVIDIA drivers. Its most prominent feature is GridLines, With which you can organize your windows into a predefined grid by a button on the title bar.

UltramonIf you prefer solutions that are not unique for a graphics card, you can start UltraMonA classic application and for those using two screens.

UltraMon not only simplifies the travel and maximized windows, but also extends the tapestry and the Taskbar. Other features include reproduction in mirror what is seen in one of the screens (mirroring) And the definition of profiles.

UltraMon The only drawback is that it is a payment program. The alternative is to give to integrated solutions and install a series of free tools that focus on specific functions.

To extend the Taskbar you have the free version MultiMonitorBut only the Pro version is compatible with Windows visual styles. The new bar will host monitor windows only where you are. An excellent free alternative is Zbar.

DisplayFusionIf you want expand a single desktop background to two or three monitorsOn the other hand, you have excellent DisplayFusion, Which is also capable of downloading images from Flickr.

Funding for this type of setup can be found on pages InterfaceLIFT, deviantART or Vladstudio. Unless you stretch the image, please note that you must add the total width of your screen. Two 17-inch monitors with a 4:3 ratio, for example, require a fund of 2560 by 1024.

Finally, to improve the organization of windows on a big space, you can try GridMove and AeroSnap. GridLines function like nView, both utilities emulate one of future interface features of Windows 7, that is, the possibility of sharing the windows in a predefined grid. GridMove has many options and shortcuts, several predefined designs, and compatible with multiple monitors.

GridMoveSample GridMove in action

Windows 7 promises better support for multiple screens, but for now, the only way to improve the situation in XP and Vista is through these utilities. As for the game – facet less "productive" – the situation is very different, as only those that offer the possibility of using multiple monitors simultaneously.

How to get rid of the security warning when you run Internet software

Just a few days we have seen how we can get rid of a warning window equivalent in the block system. Of course, for ventaneros not be jealous, now let’s see how to avoid Windows we drill over and over again with this notice of questionable value.

If you have updated Firefox to Version 3 is sure to start seeing the upper windows as far more often than you’d want. This is because before Firefox did not take the trouble to label as downloads from the Internet.

Disable this notice is not a security risk to your system but as a general rule, it is best that you leave it as is if you do not have much idea of what you’re doing. Anyway, if you tired of having to accept this window every time you run something you downloaded from the Internet (or have been sent by messenger, etc.), you can fix in a rather straightforward.

The first thing you need is to run the Group Policy, A section of Administrative Tools. What, you do not find them? This is because Group Policy is only found in the Professional version of Microsoft Windows.

If you have the Home version and do not resign to stay with folded arms in the battle against the windows of notice, you can try this Unofficial file package that, in theory, you can add Administrative Tools to Windows XP Home. Essential to read the text document, in English, included.

But hey, let’s focus. The first thing is to go to Group Policy. The quickest way is to click on the Start Menu / Run and enter:

Then we will see a window similar to the following

Here we must navigate to User Configuration / Administrative Templates / Windows Components / Attachment Manager. On the left you see a series of elements. There are several ways to protect windows from appearing, which we have chosen is the most radical: Windows does not mark any files as its source.

To do this, we double click on "Do not preserve zone information in file attachments".

Tick "Enabled", Click on OK, and finished.

Interpreters GPS for your mobile phone A

With the falling prices that have suffered in recent years, GPS navigation systems have become one of the most popular gadgets on the market.

Currently, you can find GPS devices as an option in most cars, portable navigation systems like TomTom popular or professional use browsers such as Garmin.

Besides these, there is another possibility: use your mobile phone as a GPS. A very useful option especially if other junk we carry more when we walk or we need to optimize our luggage.

What do we need to make our phone into a GPS?

First we must ensure that your terminal is capable of receiving signals from the GPS satellite network orbiting at 20,200 km altitude at the beginning of the stratosphere.

To achieve this, there are two options: buy a phone with a GPS receiver included (obviously) and another, buy a separate GPS receiver, a small device the size of a walnut can receive GPS signals and transmit these via Bluetooth, to our telephone mobile.

Software available

Once we are able to receive these signals, we can take action and install the necessary software to enable different services that enable reception of these signals.

On one side are the traditional performers, programs that use maps to represent our position on a map and calculate routes between two points.

And secondly, there are different profit-oriented study and analysis of signals offering features such as logging roads, dedicated calculating different parameters or use their own maps.

There is life, online, after Microsoft Word (I): Introduction

Online alternative to Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Buzzword, Writeboard, WriteWith, ZohoWriter

As far as I remember, I made my first steps of journalism with Microsoft Word, beginning with the awkward rag newsletters in college until my release in the skin of a very young apprentice, unfortunately captive of a minimum wage that, yes, more would like brats slicked as juicy pay weekly. At least, this experience helped me to rub elbows with the creme de la creme of the word processors of the time: Microsoft Word.

So, I admit, Word has always been with me, beside me, holding my slip and as many kits though, a moment … sure I’m not the only member of this generation in Word, I bet you also start out with Word, designing greeting cards ghastly dolls from your library with Clip Art … what those times, a murmur was a poster for the rock concert of your crew. We have now turned 30, and just as we had become sophisticated experts who know the Word by heart, even teachers quoted macros or paging, rolled kids are telling us that Word is "out of date", … comooor ? Out of …

That Word was the expiration date! And I did not know. While it is true that Word left many dead on the road, beating the competition (anyone in the room reminds the WordPerfect?), today things are changing. We have entered the era of Web 2.0, and I mean well WEB2.0, welcome to the wonderful world of online applications and services, and word processors are not excluded, as are a handful of them as Google Docs, Buzzword, Writeboard, WriteWith, ZohoWriter, Thinkfree and a few more, and the highly anticipated Office Live (the online version of the office suite’s most famous and popular history, yes but we do not rush … see why later).

All this to say that the next series of entries, published in installments, I lend the game to try and beat the strengths and weaknesses of the word processors of the web 2.0 generation. But before I binge a good text, tables and lists other tabs, however sincere gives me a little: in recent times, a few months, I stopped using Word in a treacherously discriminatory, only executed in case of emergency when I have mono Word or editing work requires a very robust, but not full power, and the interface to which, in all those years, well … damn, what do you want to tell you!, I have take care.
