Bins: groups icons on the taskbar in Windows 7

One of the most lauded features of Windows 7 is the new taskbar . The taskbar is the horizontal strip, usually in the bottom of the desk from which you access the programs and files open. In the latest version of Windows was carried out a thorough renovation of the taskbar, resulting in a more flexible tool, visual and customizable .

But not everything can be flowers. And is that the new taskbar Windows 7 feeds the risk of overcrowding of programs and files , collecting icons in it and complicating access.

To end this situation you can rely on your ability to organize or use tools such as bins ( containers ), by the creators of Fences , a unique utility that will keep your desk tidy like a charm.

Bins allows you to group icons anchored in the taskbar to your liking and show them in one piece (or container ). And how does Bins? In the simplest way imaginable.

The first thing you do is download Bins . The installation process is very simple .

Once installed, the program will display a mini-tutorial , by animated pop, shows the operation of Bins .

To group icons you drag an icon, that icon located above or group of icons that want to combine and release it in the window that appears. You can group icons to your liking , but a useful approach is to group them by type of applications : browsers, office suite, instant messaging programs, etc. …

You can move freely between the groups icons you’ve created and return them to the taskbar . To do this, simply drag them back to your new destination. It’s that simple.

Bins are available as public beta until next June 1st , so hurry if you want to try it, because after that date will cost $ 25 ($ 20 if you book now).

What do you think Bins? Is it worth paying for it?

Office-format a USB memory to NTFS in Windows XP

Javier send us a question about a very frequent operation, the disk formatting. In his case, was unable to format a large USB drive as NTFS, which Windows does not let it do by default.

There are two possible solutions to this problem. One is to use a special tool, while the other requires changing a setting in the USB memory. Look at them one by one.

Hi friends good morning.

My query is this. I have the Windows XP Home operating system installed. I need to format a drive of 32 GB Pen but with NTFS format type

When I look into the option types appear only format FAT, FAT32 . I can tell how I can do to format in NTFS type.

Thank you for your attention.

Sincerely Javier

Unlike Vista, Windows XP can not format a USB stick with NTFS file system. The advantages of using NTFS on a flash drive are evident: in addition to better performance, lets you use the Windows folder encryption and set access permissions for each file.

Solution 1: Optimizing for

By default, XP does not use the write cache on USB sticks: this enables quick removal without using the icon "Safely Remove Hardware." When not using caching, however, disable the option in the wizard NTFS formatting the drive. To enable it, go to the properties of your pen, look for the Hardware tab and click Properties:

Optimizar para rendimiento

In the Policies tab of the Properties box, select the option Optimize for performance and click OK twice. The memory will remount. When trying to format it, you’ll notice that now you have NTFS in the drop-down menu of file systems. Do not forget that quick removal is no longer reliable.

Solution 2: HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool

If you prefer to have an alternative formatting tool that forces you to change the settings for each separate USB, HP USB Disk Storage Tool can be ideal. Once installed and run, you’ll notice it looks very similar to the XP wizard:

HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool

Once you’ve selected the drive, select NTFS from the dropdown menu. You can perform a quick format and enable the compression of space if needed. If you prefer to stick with FAT32, HP USB Disk Storage Tool can add a DOS boot sector, allowing it to boot from your USB memory like a floppy disk.

Do you know another solution to this problem? Take the comments so that together we can share links, programs, and explanations. Your knowledge is welcome.

How to submit questions

We encourage you to continue sending questions so that each month we can answer the most interesting and thus provide useful solutions. Email is the following:

Just try to be concise and express as clearly as possible the problem. If a question is not answered yet, do not worry, you may have it in queue ;-)

Utilities for devices with two or more screens

The use of two or more screens are becoming increasingly widespread. According to some studies, using multiple monitors can increase productivity by over 40%, A fact not surprising when you consider that the multitasking operating systems at once fills Desktop icons and windows.

Windows native support for multiple monitors, however, leaves much to be desired, being limited to providing an extra area to put windows and icons. The rest of the interface not seem to take into account the needs of those who use two or more monitors. The main manufacturers of graphics cards and some developers have tried to fix this shortcoming.

ATI and nVidia, for example, offer their own solutions for managing multi-display environments. Hydravision, ATI, you can save up to nine Desktop profiles, add a button to maximize the windows between the screens and keyboard shortcuts that can be associated to 17 different functions. nViewOn the other hand, is included in all NVIDIA drivers. Its most prominent feature is GridLines, With which you can organize your windows into a predefined grid by a button on the title bar.

UltramonIf you prefer solutions that are not unique for a graphics card, you can start UltraMonA classic application and for those using two screens.

UltraMon not only simplifies the travel and maximized windows, but also extends the tapestry and the Taskbar. Other features include reproduction in mirror what is seen in one of the screens (mirroring) And the definition of profiles.

UltraMon The only drawback is that it is a payment program. The alternative is to give to integrated solutions and install a series of free tools that focus on specific functions.

To extend the Taskbar you have the free version MultiMonitorBut only the Pro version is compatible with Windows visual styles. The new bar will host monitor windows only where you are. An excellent free alternative is Zbar.

DisplayFusionIf you want expand a single desktop background to two or three monitorsOn the other hand, you have excellent DisplayFusion, Which is also capable of downloading images from Flickr.

Funding for this type of setup can be found on pages InterfaceLIFT, deviantART or Vladstudio. Unless you stretch the image, please note that you must add the total width of your screen. Two 17-inch monitors with a 4:3 ratio, for example, require a fund of 2560 by 1024.

Finally, to improve the organization of windows on a big space, you can try GridMove and AeroSnap. GridLines function like nView, both utilities emulate one of future interface features of Windows 7, that is, the possibility of sharing the windows in a predefined grid. GridMove has many options and shortcuts, several predefined designs, and compatible with multiple monitors.

GridMoveSample GridMove in action

Windows 7 promises better support for multiple screens, but for now, the only way to improve the situation in XP and Vista is through these utilities. As for the game – facet less "productive" – the situation is very different, as only those that offer the possibility of using multiple monitors simultaneously.

Nero is renewed in its ninth version

Today was the day chosen by the developers of Nero to expose its ninth version. In this installment, the program has gained about 150 megabytes (370 MB in total). This fact is easy to assume that much of the news found on Nero internal applications: catalog of photos, videos, music and more.

Those who prefer to have a program that all are in luck because Nero 9 is not just a recorder, in fact it is becoming less if you look at what takes the Burn tool in comparison with others. This does not prevent be the best recording package applications, and the true recall program.

Those who like an application for each function will be forced to choose during the installation do you want to add and what they prefer to discard. Will have to give the operator the "next, next, yes, yes, I agree, I agree."

The Recorder continues to maintain the same structure that I had from the fifth version, or perhaps even earlier. With good reason, developers prefer not to touch too something that works really well. Of course, included some improvements and new compatibility.

To handle the other applications, the wizard has been enhanced StartSmart. It has become a kind of exclusive to Nero Start Menu, without which it would be impossible to even remember all the functions of the toolkit. Its structure is clear and easy navigation to greatly thank to install the entire program.

In a future article we will try to fund the functions and values of the Nero suite of programs

Is there life after Partition Magic?

A key task, too often delayed into oblivion, is to partition the hard disk. The structuring of space in units promotes defense against malware attacks, while helping to control more easily readable, write and execute.

The first partition should be allocated to different units placed in the Windows system files and private papers. Thus, if for some reason we had to delete the operating system, our documents, pictures and videos would be safe in another drive.

The Windows installation disc want to create as many partitions after formatting, which can mean a great inconvenience. Added are several solutions to overcome the setback of the formatting. When Partition Magic trial version available had no doubts about the tool to use. Today we have to make do with programs that are loaded before Windows in a three and a half drive or CD.

Partition Logic

After downloading the ISO image and burn to a CD, we start the computer with the disk inside the unit to read CD or DVD. Previously we verify that the system BIOS is enabled to boot from the CD rather than from the hard disk.

Not find a program with a Windows-like interface, really comfortable to choose the size of the partitions and format type.

SwissKnife Compuapps

Create partitions on external drives, no hard disk, so the program works from Windows.

Ranish Partition Manager

This program has been the traditional alternative to Partition Magic. For anyone familiar with the BIOS menus seem very easy to handle. The interface looks the same.

As partition logic, it needs to load the program from an external drive before you start the operating system.

Another option is really convenient to use a liveCD with some version of Linux and run a partitioning program such QParted.

Interpreters GPS for your mobile phone A

With the falling prices that have suffered in recent years, GPS navigation systems have become one of the most popular gadgets on the market.

Currently, you can find GPS devices as an option in most cars, portable navigation systems like TomTom popular or professional use browsers such as Garmin.

Besides these, there is another possibility: use your mobile phone as a GPS. A very useful option especially if other junk we carry more when we walk or we need to optimize our luggage.

What do we need to make our phone into a GPS?

First we must ensure that your terminal is capable of receiving signals from the GPS satellite network orbiting at 20,200 km altitude at the beginning of the stratosphere.

To achieve this, there are two options: buy a phone with a GPS receiver included (obviously) and another, buy a separate GPS receiver, a small device the size of a walnut can receive GPS signals and transmit these via Bluetooth, to our telephone mobile.

Software available

Once we are able to receive these signals, we can take action and install the necessary software to enable different services that enable reception of these signals.

On one side are the traditional performers, programs that use maps to represent our position on a map and calculate routes between two points.

And secondly, there are different profit-oriented study and analysis of signals offering features such as logging roads, dedicated calculating different parameters or use their own maps.
